Vancouver Island University (VIU) is proud to support students with its range of scholarships, awards and bursaries. During the 2015-16 fiscal year VIU students from across all three campuses – Nanaimo, Powell River and Cowichan – were awarded almost $2 million to help them achieve their educational goals. It’s a number that’s only expected to rise.

Support is provided thanks to internal and external sources that include a combination of University funds, government grants and private donations managed by the VIU Foundation. Scholarships reward academic achievement; awards recognize academic achievement and other criteria that match donor priorities. Bursaries focus on students who demonstrate financial shortfalls.

VIU believes in providing access to an excellent education for all. For example, we’re a leader in removing barriers for students wanting to enter post-secondary education but struggle to do so due to life or financial circumstances. VIU was the first post-secondary institution in British Columbia to launch a Youth in Care Tuition Waiver program – which waives tuition for eligible students who grew up in the care system. Sixteen students entered the program when it began in 2013. This year, VIU is supporting about 70 students in the Tuition Waiver program – a significant achievement.

By welcoming all students and having robust supports to promote access and encourage success, VIU continues to provide an exceptional educational experience for all. The successful distribution of awards, scholarships and bursaries are an important part of that success.
